Relics of Ceramic Workshop Site of the Tang and Song Dynasty Disintered in Hebei Province, Bringing to Light Glazed Big Bowls with Compressed Round Shape and a Stamped Figure of Chinese Giant Salamanders (Andrias davidianus) Playing with Water

Archeologists of Hebei Province carried out archaeological excavation in Jingxing kilns of Hebei Province, and discovered a relic of porcelain workshop sites of the Tang, Song and Jin Dynasty successively laminated at one site. The porcelain workshop site of the Jin Dynasty was still in the production state before a flood disaster it had suffered from.

In Dec. 9th, we learned that Jingxing Kilns located at Jingxing County, Hebei Province was one of famous porcelain workshop sites in ancient North China. With the approval of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Archaeological Team of Jingxing Kilns, Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics excavated two sites with a total area of 310 square meters and a depth of 7.8 meters in porcelain kilns of the town of Tianchang Town, and discovered laminated layers of porcelain kiln relics of the Sui, Tang, Wudai, Song and Jin Dynasty, bringing to light a relic of porcelain workshop sites of the Tang, Song and Jin Dynasty successively laminated at one site, 75 ash pits, 28 house foundation, 31stoves and 1 remained kiln.

The glaze room and preparation room of the porcelain workshop of the Jin Dynasty were still in the production state before the flood disaster it had suffered from in the end of the Jin Dynasty. In the preparation room, there were intact potteries, porcelains and iron tools, as well as utensils such as completely preserved fine wide mouthed bottles, Huakou dish made by Chujin technique, and characterized glazed big bowls with compressed round shape, a stamped Chinese character of “Zhi”, and a stamped figure of Chinese giant salamanders playing with water. Near the west part of the preparation room, the archeologists found a sheltered field which has a total area of more than 150 square meters and the ground was completely covered by bricks. They excavated deeply in the sheltered field, bringing to light kiln relics of porcelain workshop sites of the Song and Tang Dynasty. In the big pottery urns found in the kiln relic of porcelain workshop site of the Tang Dynasty, there was lots of glazes mixed with various materials.
