The accidentally caught Chinese sucker (M. asiaticus)
Fishery officials were putting the cured fish to a pond.
Yesterday a 20Kg of Chinese sucker (M. asiaticus), which was one of national second-class protection aquatic wild animals and has a nickname of “Mermaid of the Asia”, was accidentally caught from the Yangtze River by local fishermen. The Fuling Station of Fisheries Administration and Fishing Ports Supervisory (FSFAFPS) and the Wangzhou Fisheries Institute (WFI) made an emergency rescue for the injured adult fish, which has eggs in its abdomen and is unseen for over 10 years in Fuling City. After 10 hours of rescue, the fish named “Shun Shun” passed the crisis, and then was sent to WFI to receive special breeding. It will be returned to the Yangtze River together with its baby to be born in March next year.
